Waltham Kids Become Cops, Sort Of

Twenty-one Waltham children graduated form the Waltham Youth Police Academy on Friday, July 12 after a 5-day camp during which they learned police skills.

Students learned crime scene investigation, car accident reconstruction, fingerprinting and K-9 searches among other topics, according to Waltham Police Officer Kristen Tracey, one of the camp’s coordinators. Students started each day with physical training. They operated in teams with Vincent Spoto being named platoon leader by his peers. Emma Doherty, Kyle Bourque and Rocco Spoto were named squad leaders.

"We hope to in the future expand on this program [and continue it next summer]," said Officer Kevin Devoe during the graduation ceremony at Waltham High School. This year was the program's first.

"I know this is a win-win for [the police department] because they enjoy doing this. And I just want to know, did you enjoy last week?" Mayor Jeannette McCarthy asked the students during the ceremony. The students steadfastly responded, "Yes!"

In addition to Tracey and Devoe, Officers John Farago, Ann Frassica Kelly Komola ran the academy.
