See How Much Former Officer Facing Child Porn Charges Will Get for Retirement Benefits

Former Waltham Police Officer Paul Manganelli is facing serious charges.

Former Waltham Police Officer Paul Manganelli, who is facing serious child pornography charges, will receive $26,284.32 in annual retirement benefits, according to Waltham Retirement Director Joseph Juppe.

Juppe revealed the figure weeks after the Waltham Retirement Board approved Manganelli's application for benefits. However, if Manganelli is convicted, the board has said it would review the decision and possibly revoke the benefits.

The benefits are not eligible for state taxes but will be taxed by the federal government, Juppe said.

Manganelli has pleaded not guilty to child pornpgraphy charges and has claimed he had the material as part of a Waltham Police Department investigation. The department has said Manganelli was not authorized to perform such an investigation.

The annual figure was calculated based on a formula laid out in state law that considers age, length of service and the worker's highest three consecutive earning years, Juppe said. Manganelli, who served a little more than 20 years and retired at age 47, could have received more in annual benefits had he retired at a later date.

Manganelli was arrested earlier this year after Federal Bureau of Investigation agents raided his home and found child pornography materials. Manganelli was placed on paid leave and later resigned from the police department.
