Release Conditions Eased For Waltham Police Chief

A Concord District Court judge on Wednesday ordered more lenient conditions of release for Waltham Police Chief Thomas LaCroix.

LaCroix, w against his wife her friend, appeared in court on Aug. 8 for a pre-trial hearing. He was recently released from a mental health facility. 

As part of his release conditions, LaCroix is living with his 86-year-old mother in Medfield, according to his attorney, Thomas Dreschler.

Judge Deborah Shoptesse approved LaCroix's request for more freedom as he remains free on bail. Specifically, she allowed LaCroix the following conditions,

• LaCroix will be allowed to join a gym within 10 miles of the Medfield home. He will be allowed two hours per day, three times a week, to visit the gym. 
• LaCroix will be allowed to visit his Maynard home and another home he owns in Worcester between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Dreschler said LaCroix his wife need to performance maitnence work on both homes. They plan to sell the Maynard home, according to Dreschler. 
• LaCroix will be allowed to have email and telephone contact with his wife. Dreschler requested the provision so LaCroix can arrange house matters with his wife. 
• LaCroix will also be allowed to leave the Medfield house, but must remain on the property.
• LaCroix will also be allowed to visit his sons from 2 p.m. - 7 p.m. on Aug. 11 and take them to an event in Boston on Aug. 18.
• LaCroix must remain at least 50 yards away from the second victim.

REASONS FOR THE NEW PROVISIONS

• LaCroix's wife, who made a brief appearance during the hearing to speak with the attorneys and judge, agreed with LaCroix's request saying she does not feel endangered by her husband, according to Dreschler. LaCroix's wife wrote two letters last month explaining her position -- one to Middlesex County District Attorney Gerry Leone (Leone's office is handling the case)  and the other to the court, Dreschler said. 
• In asking for the new conditions, Dreschler said LaCroix had a great career as a police officer, no criminal record and had followed the previously set conditions of release. 
• Dreschler also said LaCroix plans to continue attending court-ordered therapy sessions.

OTHER DETAILS

• LaCroix's wife plans to move out of the couple's Maynard home and is already living at another location, according to Dreschler. 
• LaCroix declined to comment on the case when approached in the court parking lot before the hearing.
