A Waltham District Court judge ordered Jared Remy held without bail during his arraignment hearing today. He is scheduled to return to court on Sept. 12.

Not guilty pleas were entered on his behalf, according to the Boston Globe

Remy's attorney, Peter Bella, did not oppose the no bail request and told the Boston Globe he had spoken to the Remy family.

During the hearing, Assistant District Attorney Lisa McGovern described a the brutal attack that resulted in Remy's arrest. At around 9 p.m. on Thursday, police received 911 calls reporting that a domestic argument had escalated to a "conflict.," McGovern said. Eyewitness reports indicated Remy repeatedly stabbed Martel with a knife during a "long, protracted," attack that left blood spatter throughout the home, according to McGovern. A neighbor attempted to pull Remy off of Martel but was not successful, McGovern said. Remy apparent swung his knife at the neighbor.

While an autopsy has yet to be done, McGovern said Martel suffered stab wounds to the her neck, legs, body and hands. Remy was covered in Martel's blood when police arrived, McGovern said. According to the Boston Globe, Remy surrendered with his hands over his head when officers arrived.

A search of the home later revealed "significant" forensic evidence, McGovern said.

UPDATE, 9:23 a.m.:
Jared Remy was arrested on Tuesday this week and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Ryan said he was released on Wednesday on personal recognizance and given a "no abuse" order.

"The bail  recommendation on Wednesday was made based on a totality of the circumstances," Ryan said. Authorities based that decision on conversations with Martel and their investigation.

Ryan said there was no active restraining order on Wednesday.

Responding to questions on the decision, Ryan said they were focused on the current investigation.
