Next Steps To Finding a New Waltham Police Chief

See what the next steps are in finding a new Waltham Police Chief.

While Mayor Jeannette McCarthy has not yet formally begun a search for a new police chief, according to city regulations, the police chief job will be posted to existing deputy chiefs and captains of the Waltham Police Department. 

If an “insufficient” number of candidates apply, Mayor Jeannette McCarthy, may, with the City Council’s permission consider additional candidates, according to city ordinances. The final selection of a new chief will be made by the mayor, but the Council must approve it, according to ordinances. 

Candidates must have at least 15 years of experience with at least five of those in a management role, according to regulations. Candidates must also have a bachelor’s degree.

While McCarthy has not yet posted the job, the city must now find a new police chief in the wake of Thomas LaCroix’s resignation. LaCroix quit on Wednesday after being sentenced to 18 months probation for attacking his at their Maynard home in June 2012.
