More Details on Child Hit By Car in Waltham

The child sustained head injuries in the crash.

A 12-year-old bicyclist sustained head injuries Tuesday morning when a dump truck struck him on Pine Street, according to Waltham Police. 

The child, a Waltham resident who was biking to school, suffered head lacerations and injuries to his right elbow, according to police.

The incident occurred at 7:20 a.m. when firefighters responded to a report of a car striking the cyclist in the area of 35 Pine St., according to police. The truck was traveling east on Pine Street when it hit the child who was crossing the street in a northerly direction. The victim was not wearing a helmet.

Firefighters treated the child at the scene before transporting his by ambulance to Leary Field. A MedFlight helicopter took the victim from the field to Children's Hospital in Boston, according to police. He was conscious and alert throughout the incident.

A 22-year-old Waltham resident was driving the truck and stopped at the scene. Police are investigating the crash but said at the moment, it does not appear the driver was at fault.
