Jared Remy Pleads Guilty to Jennifer Martel Murder

Remy, the son of Boston Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy, changed his plea to guilty Tuesday. He was sentenced to life in prison.

Jared Remy, the son of Boston Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy, pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree murder and related charges in the August stabbing death of his girlfriend Jennifer Martel.

Remy was sentenced to life in state prison without the possibility of parole.

"If you ask my family, they'd rather have me dead than her," he told the Judge Kathe Tuttman.

Remy, 35, was accused of stabbing Martel, 27, to death last August in their Waltham apartment. He initially pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

Remy changed his plea to guilty in Woburn’s Middlesex Superior Court Tuesday morning. Martel’s family was in the courtroom; Remy’s was not. Remy's lawyer said later in the hearing that Remy asked his parents not to come to court.

In court Tuesday, Remy also pleaded guilty to assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (knife), assault and battery and violation of a restraining order. He told the judge Martel had a knife and was threatening him about their daughter, but he did not dispute the prosecution’s account of the murder.

Remy showed no emotion in the courtroom.

A day before the Aug. 14 murder, Remy was arrested after he allegedly shoved Martel into a mirror. He was released on his own recognizance.

Remy and Martel's daughter, Arianna, now 5, was home at the time of the murder. Arianna splits time with both of her grandparents and the family of Martel’s brother, Brian.

While in jail, Remy allegedly assaulted a correctional officer and a fellow detainee.
