Update, 11:05 a.m. Friday, March 21

The victim in Thursday night’s fatal shooting at Waltham’s Gardencrest Apartments was 17-year-old Tyler Zanco, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.

Zanco was a senior at Waltham High School. He was a captain on the school’s wrestling team and played football and lacrosse.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Waltham Police Chief Keith MacPherson said Friday morning that officials are investigating the shooting but no arrests have been made. As of Friday morning, authorities did not believe the shooting was a random attack, according to the district attorney’s office.

Waltham police responded to the parking lot at 31 Middlesex Circle at about 10:08 p.m. Thursday for a report of shots fired. Upon their arrival, officers discovered a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound in the parking lot.

Zanco was transported to Newton Wellesley Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting is urged to contact Waltham police at 781-314-3607 or Massachusetts State Police Detectives at 781-897-6600.

According to a Waltham High parent, Zanco had just attended the wrestling team’s end-of-the-season banquet with his mother on Wednesday night.
