Chinese National, of Belmont, Re-Sentenced for Illegally Exporting Military Electronics to China

A Chinese national living in Belmont, who was the former manager of a Massachusetts electronics company in Waltham, was re-sentenced Wednesday for illegally exporting military and sophisticated electronics components to China, according to federal authorities.

Yufeng Wei, 50, who ran Chitron Electronics Inc. in Waltham, was sentenced to 23 months in prison for conspiring to illegally export the materials with her now ex-husband, Zhen Zhou Wu, according to a Thursday release from U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz’ office.

The exported components could be used in electronic warfare, military radar, fire control, military guidance and control equipment, missile systems and satellite communications, according to authorities.

Many of Chitron’s clients were Chinese military contractors for China’s Army, Navy and Air Force, authorities said.

The Department of Defense said Wei and Wu seriously threatened United States national and regional security interests and said the components were “precisely the [types of] items … that the People’s Liberation Army actively seeks to acquire.”

Wei and Wu were first convicted in May 2010. From 1996 to 2008, the couple exported tens of millions of dollars worth of equipment, authorities said.

Because two counts against Wei and Wu were vacated by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in 2013, they had to be re-sentenced. Wu was sentenced to 84 months in prison at his re-sentencing hearing last September.

Wei was also sentenced to two years of supervised release Wednesday. After serving her sentence, Wei, who has been residing in Belmont as a Lawful Permanent Resident, will be subject to deportation, authorities said.
