Bill to Protect Abuse Victims May Also Protect Abusers

A bill being considered on Beacon Hill is designed to protect the privacy of domestic violence victims, but it may also protect the abusers and prevent the public from hearing about cases such as the one against the former Waltham Police chief.

The bill would require the name of the accused to be kept secret in order to protect the privacy of the family members or others who were abused in the incident, according to a story in the Boston Globe.

Some say the bill goes too far in efforts to protect victims’ privacy by limiting the public’s right to know.
