Alleged Triggerman in Tyler Zanco’s Murder Turns Himself In

Domingo Mendes, the 22-year-old Belmont man who allegedly shot Waltham’s Tyler Zanco to death on March 20, turned himself in to Waltham police Thursday evening.

Mendes did so accompanied by his attorney, according to a release from the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office. He was wanted on the following charges: murder, possession of a firearm and conspiracy to violate drug laws.

Mendes allegedly shot the 17-year-old Zanco at about 10 p.m. that night in the Gardencrest Apartments parking lot on Middlesex Circle in Waltham.

Zanco, a Waltham High senior and wrestling captain, allegedly had a classmate set up a fake drug deal so that he could get back at 21-year-old Taylor Poulin, of Newton, for ripping off his cousin for 2 ounces of marijuana. Zanco allegedly tased Poulin with a stun gun in the parking lot, before Mendes, who arrived with Poulin, fired the fatal shots.

Poulin was arrested a week after the shooting in Windham, Maine, and was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, unlicensed possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and conspiracy to violate drug laws. He is being held without bail.

Mendes is expected to be arraigned Friday in Waltham District Court, according to the release.

After the shooting, Zanco was transported to Newton Wellesley Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
