Already seeing the impact of Patch's restructuring and not liking it one bit.

The sole reason I come to Patch at all is for local news. I thought I had found a Waltham-specific site and was excited to see people tuning in and being involved in my new community... and just when it seemed like things were ramping up, now all I'm seeing is "Trending in America" (really?), some random's take on a movie any schmuck can see, and the utterly impersonal and unoriginal "Superbowl snacks!!!" Maybe 3-4 articles that are at all relevant to Waltham on the front page.

If I want to see national or statewide news, I will go to an actual news site. If things continue in this direction it will be a huge disappointment. Hopefully the local posters and bloggers can keep things relevant and lively.

I came for the local news too. It's still early to tell, but it seems to be moving away from covering the local stuff and focusing on county or state material now. I'll lose interest too if they do that. I haven't seen a comment from Ryan. If they let him go, I hope they change their mind and hire him back.

Tim, unfortunately they did let Ryan go.

That's unfortunate. Maybe the city could hire him as a social media blogger so he could keep things rolling on here. Of course it's better to have a third party journalist challenging our town councilors rather than a city PR guy. I'd still rather see the Patch bring Ryan back.

As a blogger for the Waltham Philharmonic Orchestra (notice the "Waltham"?), I, too, hope for continued local coverage and that people will still be tuned to local bloggers and commenters. I don't understand why a "business model" DOESN'T include what people REALLY want! Go figure...

What has happened here is precisely the same reason why we discontinued our subscription with the Waltham News Tribune. The "local" paper was no longer local.

The pages and pages of adverts were local.

Thanks Karen, I enjoy your posts. It does look like it's getting a little better. Hopefully whoever took over is just finding their feet... but I agree with people that it's a shame Ryan is gone, since he really seemed to be making an on-the-ground effort.

Thanks, Aly. I understand Ryan's taking care of himself, and is not disappearing from the Waltham scene, though I don't know the details. While I don't know "who" you are, I encourage you to take a look at my blog and perhaps check out the WPO--we'd be happy to have you join our audience!
