Obituary: Salvatore DeMarco, of Waltham

Mr. Salvatore P. DeMarco, of Waltham, died Sunday, April 13, 2014 at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge. He was 88.

Affectionately known as either "Sal" or "Toto" to family and friends, he was born at home in Watertown on Aug. 6, 1925 to the late Thomas and Pasqualina (Merullo) DeMarco. He was a 1943 graduate of Watertown High School and joined the U.S. Navy right after that, serving for the duration of World War II.

On May 28, 1950, he married Anna M. Porcaro of Watertown and the couple lived in town before moving to Waltham in 1966 where they have been residents since. Sal worked for 23 years as a welder for Lite Control Corp. in Watertown before becoming a route-man for Folz Vending Company of New York where he worked until his retirement.

In addition to caring for his family, his passions beyond home were playing a good round of golf, bowling and coin collecting. Three years ago, he won a tournament at his favorite course, Leo J. Martin, where he was an informal instructor of the game.

Sal was a faithful member of Our Lady's Parish in Waltham where he was a longtime usher. He also belonged to the Amvets Post 41 in Watertown.

In addition to his wife of 64 years, Anna, he leaves his children, Laura A. Osborne and her husband Paul of Dedham, Diane M. Abbott and her husband Harvey of Burlington, Stephen P. DeMarco of Waltham, Nancy L. Fletcher and her husband Dave of Natick and Robert T. DeMarco of Lincoln; his grandchildren, Lauren Abbott and Julia and Christian Fletcher; his sisters, Mary Grilli Smith of Revere, Linda Mason of Saugus, Sylvia Kovil of Revere, Loretta DeSisto of Maine and Edith Oxford of Oregon and many nieces and nephews.

Sal was also the brother of the late Larry Covino.

Family and friends will honor and remember Salvatore's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main St. (Route 20), Waltham, on Tuesday, April 22, from 4-8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham, where his funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will take place on Thursday in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
