Obituary: Anthony Mancuso, Waltham's Head Mechanic for 37 Years

Mr. Anthony A. Mancuso, of Waltham, died on Friday, April 11, 2014 in Milford Regional Hospital. He was 90.

Anthony was born on June 20, 1923 in Waltham a son of the late Joseph and Anna (Malta) Mancuso. He graduated from Waltham Vocational High School. He was an avid football player and co-captained the football team.

Like many men his age, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. Tony honorably served his country in World War II and was present when the flag was raised in Iwo Jima. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Upon return from the service, he married Lydia G. Piscia on Oct. 15, 1947 in Sacred Heart Church in Milford. They lived in Waltham all of their married lives.

He worked as head mechanic in the Department of Public Works for the City of Waltham for over 37 years, retiring in 1984.

Retirement afforded him time to paint stills, work in his gardens, woodwork and follow his favorite football teams.

He is predeceased by his siblings Joseph, Philip and William Mancuso, Carmella D'Olympio and Theresa Vitale.

In addition to his wife of 66 years, Lydia, he leaves his children, Bernadette M. Kobierecki and her husband Joseph of Medway and Michael A. Mancuso and his wife Donna of Sturbridge; his sisters, Mary Rigoli of Waltham, Patricia McLaughlin and Pauline Hempel, both of Prescott, Ariz.; his grandchildren, Melissa A. Conner and her husband Christopher of Albany, N.Y., Rachel M. Kobierecki of Medway and Andrew M. Mancuso of Palmer; his great-grandchildren Abigail, Anthony and Nathan Conner; also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will honor and remember Anthony's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main St. (Route 20), Waltham, on Tuesday, April 15, from 4-8 p.m. and again at 10 a.m. on Wednesday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham, where his funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery.
