Edward Cadmus Haines, Jr. was 76.

Edward Cadmus Haines, Jr., on January 13, 2014, age 76 of Waltham MA. Born on May 4, 1937, in Moorestown, NJ, to Edward and Marian Haines.  Ted grew up in a Quaker household and graduated from Moorestown High School, before attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he belonged to Theta Xi fraternity (Delta Chapter) and graduated with the class of 1959 with a BS in Electrical Engineering.  Ted later completed his MS in Electrical Engineering from MIT and created the TREET computer language for his thesis.

He worked at RCA in NJ and then MITRE when he moved to Lexington, MA with his wife Liz where he spent the next 27 years raising his family.  Ted was part of the first generation of programmers, developing new programming languages at MITRE Corporation in the 1960’s, and subsequently developing software at MIT Lincoln Labs, and Bolt, Beranek, & Newman (BB&N), where he worked until retirement in 1999.

Ted worked on one of the first email systems while at BB&N in the 80’s.  Ted was the loving father of the late Charles Haines of Marlborough, MA (deceased December 31, 2013), Frederick Haines and his wife Rebecca of Arlington, VA, daughter Cindy and husband Al of Chelmsford, MA, and grandfather to Tyler, Austin and Justin.  He was formerly married to Elizabeth Haines-Papagiannis of Lexington and to Connie Dennison of Arlington, MA.  He is also survived by his sisters Elizabeth (Betty) Williamson, Martha (Molly) Haines and many nieces and nephews.

“Magnificent Ted” will also be deeply missed by many whose lives he touched in the wide variety of community groups he participated in, from his men’s group in which he was active for 22 years, to consciousness-raising groups seeing new ways for communities to foster tolerance, inclusion, understanding, and harmony. His passions included camping at his cabin in Vermont, hiking, trail finding, beaches, yoga, raw food, nutrition and Breyer’s Vanilla Bean ice cream!

Ted was a loving embodiment of kindness, generosity, curiosity, and hospitality.  He was always considerate and appreciative of others.  He loved to host community events in his home.  He thrived in any community where people came together to be open and honest with each other. Ted deeply appreciated and honored the human spirit, and also loved to play with technology.  He brought his technology expertise together with his love of hiking to use GPS to update local trail maps for the towns of Lexington, Lincoln, Waltham, and Weston.  Ted loved classical music, especially the work of Bach, which he played on his harpsichord, keyboards and recorder. Ted will be remembered as affectionate, grounded and practical by those around him, who relied on his clear thinking and ability to speak truly from the heart.
