Mary Gorman, Longtime Waltham Librarian, Dies at 68

Gorman was a past president of the Waltham Garden Club as well.

Mrs. Mary M. (McKenzie) Gorman, of Framingham and formerly of Waltham, died on Monday, Feb. 17, 2014 in Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston. She was 68.

Mary was born in Waltham on Sept. 2, 1945, a daughter of the late Alexander and Mary (O'Brien) McKenzie. After graduation from high school, she spent time traveling throughout Europe. Upon returning home, she earned her associates degree in business management from Auqinas College in Newton and later her bachelor's degree in English from Regis College in Weston.

In February of 1971, she married Donald F. Gorman Jr., and the pair made their home in Waltham. She began working as a librarian at the Waltham Public Library in 1984, having retired only a few years ago, she still enjoyed temping whenever they needed a hand. After retirement, she went to work as the event coordinator at the Spellman Museum of Stamps and Postal History in Weston.

In her spare time, Mary loved to garden and had been past president of the Waltham Garden Club. She enjoyed spending time on the beach, especially in Dennisport where the family maintained a summer home. She traveled extensively and a train excursion through Colorado was especially memorable. Her life was her children and her grandchildren. She was a wonderful host and loved to bring everyone together under one roof.

She was the wife of the late Donald F. Gorman, Jr., and is survived by her children, Julie M. Walsh and her husband, Kenneth, of Marlborough, Alexander C. Gorman and his wife, Lindsay, of Louisville, Ky., Leslie S. Phelan and her husband, Eric, of Canton and Susan Silva and her husband, Daniel, of Wrentham; her grandchildren, Kevin, Vivian and Timothy Walsh, Hudson Blake Gorman, Phoebe and Gwenn Phelan and McKenzie and Riley Silva; her brothers, Bernard McKenzie and his wife, Ann Marie, of Framingham, Paul Kevin McKenzie and his wife, Joan, of Sandwich, Daniel McKenzie and his wife, Judy, of Kingston; her aunt Sr. Dorothy McKenzie, CSJ, of Framingam; her dear friends, Sharon Wilder and her husband, Fred, and Carolyn Strange and her late husband, Ernie, and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was also the sister of the late John McKenzie.

Family and friends will honor and remember Mary's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main St. (Route 20), Waltham, on Thursday, Feb. 20, from 4-8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Friday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church, 133 School St., Waltham, where her funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
