Dorothy O'Rourke, Longtime Waltham Resident, Dies at 87

O'Rourke died Thursday, Feb. 13.

Mrs. Dorothy T. (Kelly) O'Rourke, of Waltham, died on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014 in Mount Auburn Hospital, Cambridge. She was 87.

Dot was born in Newton on Feb. 8, 1927, a daughter of the late Patrick and Mary (Corcoran) Kelly. She married John P. O'Rourke on Oct. 2, 1954 and the couple settled in Waltham where they would raise their family.

She was wonderful and caring wife and mother and extended her hospitality to the neighborhood, having an open door policy for all of her children's friends. She was very involved in her home parish of Saint Jude's, where she belonged to the Lady's Sodality and bowling league. She was proud of her Irish heritage and enjoyed listening to the Irish Hit Parade on WROL Radio. She loved the simple things in life, Catholic TV, holidays and decorations, dining out and shopping, but most importantly time spent with family.

In addition to her husband, John P. O'Rourke, she leaves her children, Maryellen O'Rourke, James O'Rourke and Carol O'Rourke, all of Waltham; her brothers and sister, Francis Kelly and Paul Kelly, both of Waltham, and Marie Kelly of Newton, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was also the mother of the late Sharon and John O'Rourke and sister of the late John and Thomas Kelly.

Family and friends will honor and remember Dot's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main St. (Route 20), Waltham, on Tuesday, Feb. 18, from 4-8 p.m. and again at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Jude Church, 147 Main St., Waltham, where her funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Newton Cemetery.
