Waltham Veteran Receives Long Overdue Medal

A World War II veteran from Waltham was recently awarded the Bronze Star more than 50 years after fighting in an April 1945 battle, according U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren's office. 

Ralph Sabatino, a U.S. Army veteran, was awarded the medal during an Oct. 28 visit to Warren's office. Although he qualified for the award for his actions during an April 10, 1945 battle, he never received it. Sabatino recently reached out to Warren's office, which inquired about the issue. 

The award is given to soldiers for meritorious service and heroism, according to Warren's Office. It's the fourth highest award given by the military. 

“I am proud to join your friends and family in congratulating you on receiving The Bronze Star Medal,” reads the citation presented to Sabatino. "Your bravery and dedicated service during World War II is greatly appreciated and your heroic actions as a member of the Trailblazers are well deserving of this honor. On behalf of citizens all across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the United States of America, thank you for your service.”

Sabatino served in H Company, second battalion of the the 275th Infantry Regiment. His unit was part of the drive through Central Europe and the area around the Rhine River in Germany.
