Waltham School Receives Accolade

A formal announcement will be made on the award on Nov. 6.

The James Fitzgerald Elementary School has received a commendation from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for its recent academic improvements.

The school has been named one of 48 this year’s 48 Commendation Schools for its improvements on English Language Arts and math MCAS scores and its improvements for scores for both subjects among the “high needs” subgroups of students, according to the announcement from DESE. The school placed among other Level 1 schools.

“This is a very proud moment for the school, the district, and the City of Waltham,” Waltham Public Schools Superintendent Susan Nicholson wrote in an email to the school’ interim principal, David Castelline.
