The volunteer corps of cooks honor
23 agencies that feed the underserved in Massachusetts
Join Community Cooks corps of 500 volunteers as they rattle the pots ‘n’ pans on Sunday, Oct. 6 at the Exchange Conference Center to celebrate the 23 community agencies that deliver meals to our vulnerable neighbors.
The money raised at the 5 p.m. fund-raiser on Boston’s Fish Pier will help Community Cooks -- which began two decades ago as a group of neighbors cooking meals for the Somerville Homeless Coalition -- continue its mission as well as widen its geographic reach into more towns in the commonwealth.
Some of the underserved groups that benefit from this cooking cause include homeless adults and children, women in crisis, at-risk youth, low-income seniors and people struggling with addiction or mental and physical disabilities.
During the past fiscal year, 22,800 people, including those helped by Waltham's women-in-crisis agency, REACH, were served home cooked meals prepared by Community Cooks volunteers.
Ellen Parker, executive director of Project Bread – The Walk for Hunger, and state Rep. Marjorie Decker (D-Cambridge) will both address the group during the evening.
