State Shutters Waltham Restaurant

The restaurant is located at 288 Moody St.

The Massachusetts Department of Revenue has seized a Waltham restaurant for not paying a large amount of taxes, according to a DOR spokesman.

State officials seized Tara Restaurant, at 288 Moody St. on Wednesday morning for non-payment of $86,768.15, according to DOR spokesman Ann Dufresne. Specifically, the restaurant was not paying its meals taxes or taxes from worker paychecks, Dufresne said.

"The state seized the contents of the business, including kitchen equipment, refrigerators, pizza ovens, computer system, telephones, chairs, tables and cash register and locked the doors," Dufresne said in a statement.

The non-payment issue began around 10 years ago, Dufresne said. Massachusetts land records show a long history of tax liens against the business.

The DOR said it could release the business back to owner Myriam Villarroel once she works out a plan to address the tax liability, according to Dufresne.

"It is not unusual for owners of seized businesses to address the tax liability with a lump sum payment or working out a payment agreement within hours and days of a seizure," Dufresne said.

If the payments are not made, the state can put the business up for auction, she said.
