New Signs for Moody Street?

The proposal, if approved, could change the face of Moody Street.

Could Moody Street soon see a change in its signage?

The Downtown Waltham Partnership has proposed altering the city's sign regulations to allow for signs that would be more visible in the downtown portion of Moody Street, according to its director Charnan Bray.

A public hearing on the proposal has been scheduled for Nov. 25 at 8 p.m. at Waltham City Hall.

Specifically, they have proposed an amendment to existing zoning regulations that would allow for "projecting signs," in Business C districts including the downtown portion of Moody Street, according to the City Council agenda. Currently, such signs are not allowed in Business C districts.

A projecting sign is defined as, "any sign that is suspended from or supported by a building or other structure more or less at right angles to the structure," according to city regulations.

The proposal, if approved, would allow for one sign, not larger than six square feet, per business. The signs would have to stand at least eight feet above the sidewalk and would have to hang at least four feet from the building. Signs with LEDs, fluorescent lighting, or neon lights would be prohibited. Businesses would not have to get a special permit for signs.
