New Liquor Store Opens in Waltham

A Brookline man recently opened a new liquor store on Trapelo Road in Waltham.

A new liquor store has opened on Trapelo Road in Waltham.

Beaver Brook Bottles, at 86 Trapelo Road, opened during the week of Dec. 24 in the home of the former Cask & Keg liquor store, according to owner Gerry Finnegan. The store carries beer and wine, said Finnegan, a Brookline resident.

"It's going pretty well," Finnegan told Waltham Patch.

Finnegan, who owns the Washington Square Tavern in Brookline, said his connections to Waltham brought him to the new Waltham location. Finnegan, a native of Ireland who immigrated to the United States 16 years ago, said customers of his Brookline business had asked him where they could buy the beer and wine served there. Looking to open a new liquor store, Finnegan noticed the Waltham location, by which he frequently rides his bicycle.

Finnegan later bought the store, but quickly realized he would need to fully renovate it.

"It was so horrible inside," Finnegan said.

Finnegan installed new electrical wiring, lighting, and plumbing to create a clean and safe retail environment. He hopes it attracts neighborhood residents with a wide selection and competitive prices.

“The whole focus of the business is the people that live in the neighborhood," Finnegan said.  "It is an extension ... it's basically an off-campus version of [the Washington Square restaurant.]

The store will also produce craft beers, Finnegan said.

Finnegan still has a little more work to do. He said he is still working on completing a new website for the store.

Finnegan’s store is the latest in a long list of new businesses opening in Waltham or companies with plans to open in Waltham.
