New Development in Waltham Work Out World Flap

Work Out World in Waltham is seeking to operate 24 hours per day.

Work Out World has withdrawn its request for a license to operate 24 hours per day.

The Waltham City Council approved the withdrawal during its Sept. 24 meeting without prejudice, meaning the company can reapply for the license at a later date. The withdrawal comes after the License and Franchise Committee recommended the full council deny the request, according to city records.

The issue recently arose when Waltham Police responded to a robbery at the gym and noticed it was open past its permitted time, according to City Councilor Gary Marchese. The company later admitted it had been operating 24 hours without the proper licnense, Marchese said.

Police then told Work Out World the needed to apply for a permit to operate 24 hours, Marchese.

Marchese said he opposed the request for several reasons. He said the area residents needed a respite from traffic between 12 a.m. and 6 a.m. on an otherwise busy street which is also home to BJ's Wholesale Club. Also, Marchese said that Work Out World did not consult with abutters before applying for the permit.

"That's why I'll never support an all-night license," Marchese said.
