Will Panera Bread Get A Drive-Thru?

Panera Bread is planning a second Waltham location.

A Waltham City Council subcommittee has recommended councilors reject a drive-thru proposal for a planned second location of Panera Bread.

Waltham City Councilor Edmund Tarallo, during a Sept. 24 City Council meeting, said the company still plans build a new branch, but without the drive-thru at the Main Street Marketplace location. Panera Bread has requested a fast food permit, which would allow the restaurant to operate without the drive-thru, but it has not been approved.

The Ordinance and Rules Committee drive-thru recommendation comes after several residents and city councilors voiced concerns that a drive-thru would increase traffic and parking congestion on an already busy street.

Wait - they don't have "a fast food permit, which would allow the restaurant to operate without the drive-thru," even though the restaurant looks to be about 75% built? Very confused. Why would they need a permit to allow them to operate *without* a drive through window, if the drive through window is what's at issue? And why would they go ahead and build the restaurant if they hadn't obtained a permit to operate???

Dennis, All fast-food restaurants are required to have a fast-food permit to operate, regardless of whether they have a drive-thru. As for construction, you would have to ask Panera Bread.

Actually construction questions would be Waltham Ventures, LLC, the owner of the complex. Panera is a proposed tenant.

Just noticed today while driving by that the drive-thru window has already been installed. Are you sure the above information is accurate and up to date?

I've only driven by once in the past week, but it looks like they had installed the drive-thru in hopes that it would be approved. Since it ultimately wasn't, it looks like the drive-thru area was made inaccessible to vehicle traffic and is likely being re-purposed as green space.
