Another Starbucks Coming to Waltham?

The store would be located at 1019 Trapelo Rd.

Starbucks is aiming to open a new location at 1019 Trapelo Rd., according to the attorney representing the developer of the site.

“Starbucks would like very much to go there,” said attorney Philip McCourt, who represents the developer, 1019 Trapelo LLC.

If approved, it would be one of Waltham’s first Starbucks stores. The company has already proposed another store at the former Polaroid site at 1265 Main St.

Starbucks’s two previous proposals, including one at 1019 Trapelo Rd., failed to gain approval. A similar proposal for 1019 Trapelo Rd. a year and a half ago was withdrawn after traffic concerns arose.

1019 Trapelo LLC, the site’s developer, also proposed a bank and an Asian fusion restaurant, during Monday’s City Council meeting. Specifically, the developer is seeking special permits to operate the Starbucks and the restaurant, since both are considered fast food under city regulations.

DETAILS

  • The building, which has been under construction for months, would be one story and span approximately 9,000 square feet when completed, according to McCourt.
  • The Starbucks would comprise of 1,500 square feet while the Asian eatery would take up 1,550 square feet.
  • The bank would take up 2,000 square feet. The remaining space would be for retail uses, according to McCourt.
  • The hours for Starbucks would be 6 a.m. – 11 p.m.
  • The hours for the Asian restaurant would be 11 a.m. – 11 p.m.
  • The site would have 47 parking spaces.

The issued was referred to the City Council’s Rules & Ordinance Committee for further review.

What do you think the odds are that this Starbucks will be approved? Next to nothing? What has changed since the last time they were shot down here? The whole thing is very strange.........

Waltham has tons of Dunkins why not starbucks.....
Deva June 12, 2013 at 03:41 PM
Because the man who owns all the Dunkins' has sway with the council. People, stop drinking the cool-aid and wake up.

I have heard this time and time again, but a single individual could not and would have no reason to block these stores in Waltham. There are numerous Dunkins in town and they all seem to do well. Starbucks caters to individuals who often like to linger and have meetings within. It is highly unlikely that opening one is going to impact any other coffee shop's business 1 iota.

The second bullet in the Details section of the article is factually inaccurate. The article states the bank would fill the remaining space after the coffee shop and asian restaurant (would be approx 6000 sq ft). Per the attorney at the city council meeting, this space would be divided up amongst at least 2 and possibly more tenants depending on who leases the space and how much is needed. A 6,000 sq ft bank is not likely, so I'd imagine this would be split at least 3 ways.

If you don't think a single person has that much sway then you don't know much about city politics Beryl.

Unsubstantiated? Sorry, let me clean it up. Someone has undue influence, I belive, as some projects slide right through and others go nowhere. But don't worry, the councilors just got a raise and health benifits along with a raise for the fire chief, a summer intern for the fire chief (1500 bucks, whose kid needed a job) a new admin assistant for the PD along with a 15% raise for the debuty chief and only a 3% raise for the chief (maybe he needs the money to pay for the city car he crashed into his gararge door). 50K for the media manager, again, who has the relative that needs a job? I found these items in 30 minutes in the budget, and our elected "leaders" role over.....so why should I believe that this permiting process is on the level, nothing else is........

Hi Adam, Maybe I made a mistake, but can you leave info here to make your point?
