Waltham Mayor Jeannette McCarthy has issued a statement in which she says she has taken steps to terminate Waltham Police Chief Thomas LaCroix's employment.

"He had a chance to be the Chief of Police of Waltham. A jury conviction of two criminal charges against Mr. LaCroix ended that. I have taken the necessary steps to remove him," McCarthy said.

McCarthy said Acting Police Chief Keith MacPherson will remain in place until the "appropriate time."

On Wednesday, LaCroix was sentenced to 18 months of probation after being convicted of two misdemeanor counts of assault and battery on his wife, Andrea LaCroix.
