13 Ways To Help Your Waltham Neighbors During the Snowstorm

Elderly neighbors may need an extra helping hand during the stormy weather.

With the snow pelting down and piling up, a deliberate act of kindness could be invaluable in helping an older adult to be safe over the next few days.

Here’s a short list of ways to offer a bit of help to an aging neighbor who might be in need of some support:

  • Introduce yourself and provide a note which includes your phone number to indicate that you’re available if needed.
  • Clear a walkway. Remove snow from stairs. Older adults are at a higher risk of falling.
  • Check to see if your neighbor has an working flashlight or if batteries are needed in the event of a power outage.
  • Bring a sweet treat to share and take the time to visit to help ease social isolation.
  • Deliver a home-cooked meal.
  • Let your neighbor know you’re available in the event of an emergency.
  • Offer the use of your cell phone if the phone lines go “dead.”
  • Take out the dog.
  • Spread some ice melt. Leave a can of ice melt and a scoop at the door.
  • Clear off a car.
  • Ask if they anticipate needing a prescription medication pickup in the next day or two.
  • Check to whether outdoor lights are working.
  • Clear the snow off of a house number so that emergency personnel can quickly verify a house location in the event of an emergency.

Even if you don't know your neighbor by name, chances are he or she would welcome your visit and assistance.
