MOUNT AUBURN HOSPITAL DOCTOR LEADS FIRST-EVER MEETING OF THE SOCIETY OF PHYSICIAN QUALITY OFFICERS

Susan Abookire, MD MPH, Chair, Department of Quality and Patient Safety at Mount Auburn Hospital, led the first annual meeting of the Society of Physician Quality Officers (SPQO) last month, co-sponsored by the Massachusetts Medical Society. Dr. Abookire is the President and co-founder of SPQO and the organizations’ first annual meeting had top leaders in quality from over 16 hospitals in 5 states, leading discussions on this powerful and still emerging area of health care.

Discussions at the conference focused around coordinated health care systems, population management, clinical integration, cross continuum design, and value, and the theme of the meeting was on the Chief Quality Officer in an evolving healthcare landscape. Dr. Abookire of Mount Auburn Hospital began the first-ever meeting with welcoming statements and also led talks on Preparing Future Leaders: Curriculum for HMS Fellowship in Quality and Patient Safety.

SPQO is a relatively new non-profit professional organization formed by a small group of chief quality officers who realized that the work challenges that they were encountering, such as educating hospital boards and leading change, were being experienced by other chief quality officers. The mission of SPQO seeks to advance patient safety and clinical quality improvement by creating a physician community with specialized expertise that allows for shared learning and advocacy within this domain.

“Leading healthcare quality in this evolving era of health care reform takes a collaborative effort among professionals.  The SPQO vision is to become the recognized leading national resource for providing education and expertise in clinical quality and safety. The first annual meeting is an important step in realizing this vision,” said Dr. Abookire.
