Waltham Land Trust Sponsors Duck Walk January 27

On Sunday, January 27, at 10 a.m., Waltham Land Trust will hold its 8^th Annual Duck Walk on the Charles River. The Land Trust will host a “primer” of birds expected to be seen at an evening talk and slide show at the Waltham Library, January 16 at 7:30 p.m.

Maybe you don’t realize it, but Spring isn’t the only time to see birds: from November to March, a variety of northern-dwelling ducks come south from Canada to winter on our waterways. From diving ducks to dabbling ducks, from the diminutive Ruddy Duck, to the elaborate Hooded Merganser (the parrot of the ponds), come see what’s living in Waltham, and where to find them. We’ll hope to see Common and Hooded Mergansers, Ringnecks, Mallards, Goldeneyes and Wood Ducks. Last year we saw nearly every variety of winter waterfowl, including an American Bald Eagle!

Local birders who frequent the Charles River will lead the walk, but all are strongly encouraged to attend the Duck Walk Warm Up at the library and help with identification.

Meet behind the Shaw’s Supermarket, 130 River Street, Waltham, next to the Mary Early Foot Bridge that goes over the Charles River. Bring binoculars if you have them and dress warmly. Please note that participants must be able to be quiet and observant.

This walk is free and open to the public. It is part of an ongoing series of events designed to highlight Waltham’s many open spaces.
