Spare Change for Big Oil!

Waltham, MA – On Saturday, August 4, people across Massachusetts will participate in grassroots tongue-in-cheek fundraisers for oil companies in need of financial support. Citizens will take to beaches, town squares, and farmer’s markets with donation cans and ask passerbys to pitch in to help Big Oil, Coal, and Gas.

The goal of the event is to raise awareness about the fact that, in this time of recession, economic stagnation, and hardship for many Americans, the Big Five oil companies – ExxonMobil, BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, and Shell – made a record $137 billion profits in 2011. Despite these record profits fossil fuel companies received $11 billion of taxpayer dollars in subsidies.

Inspired by the global grassroots network 350.org and organized by the citizens’ group 350 Massachusetts, Spare Change for Big Oil! will be one of several simultaneous events in major towns across the state that day.

WHAT:

  • People in Waltham and across Massachusetts raising funds to support oil, coal, and gas companies in need.
  • Press conference to present a check to politicians who support fossil fuels on behalf of oil, coal, and gas companies.

WHO:

  • Climate, health, and justice activists, veterans, students, religious leaders, and church members.
  • 350 Massachusetts.

WHERE:

  • Waltham Farmer’s Market (1 Moody Street, Waltham, MA 02453) and all over the state of Massachusetts.

WHEN: Saturday, August 4th

  • 9:30AM – 2:30PM and fundraisers happening all day.

VISUALS:

  • Hundreds of people across the state asking people to “spare change for big oil!” and holding out coffee cans and signs such as “The fossil fuel industry needs YOU!”, “Help raise ExxonMobil’s profits today!”, and “Billions more for Big Oil!”

350 Massachusetts is part of a worldwide movement to solve the climate crisis and build a fossil fuel-free world. The event is part of the international 350.org campaign to End Fossil Fuel Subsidies.
