Markey Leads Gomez in New Suffolk/WHDH Poll

Congressman leads Gabriel Gomez by 17 points.

A new Suffolk University/7NEWS (WHDH) poll shows a strong lead for Democratic U.S. Congressman Edward Markey over Republican businessman and former U.S. Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez in the race for the U.S. Senate special election. The poll of 500 likely voters has Markey at 52 percent and Gomez at 35 percent. Eleven percent of voters in the poll were undecided. A third-party candidate, Richard Heos of the Twelve Visions Party, got 1 percent and another 1 percent refused to respond. David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center in Boston, said along with the announcement of the poll that Markey has "a large lead over his Republican opponent who voters are unsure about." Former Waltham Councilor Plans Seeking Return to Council

Former councillor says she wants to continue improving Waltham.

Former City Councillor Sally Collura says she is seeking to return to the city council she left in 2011. Collura told Waltham Patch she has taken out nominated papers for an at-large seat and has already held a fundraiser. “I have been overwhelmed with the kind comments of people, and I believe that the people out there … are sincere about that,” she told Waltham Patch.  Collura, who lost her 2011 reelection bid to Councillor Joe Vizard in 2011, said she wants to continue to work to improve Waltham and work on incoming business development.  The deadline to submit nomination papers with signatures is June 27 and the primary election is set for Sept. 17. The general election is scheduled for Nov. 5.

Waltham Teacher Announces Run For City Council Seat

The teacher plans to challenge an incumbent city councillor.

A Waltham High School teacher has announced he will run for the Ward 8 City Council seat. Francis X. Stanton, a U.S. History teacher, said in a statement he has pulled nomination papers to get on the ballot for the September primary election. Ward 8 Councillor Stephen Rourke told Waltham Patch he intends to seek reelection but has not yet taken out nomination papers.  Stanton, who previously lost a bid to become a state representative for Waltham, cited several reasons for running including attracting development to the downtown area. "I would like to see the Southside flourish as a neighborhood. Accordingly, with input from the neighborhood, a possible further extension of Moody Street’s business district should be explored.
