The mail processing center in Waltham will likely close and move operations to two other locations, according to the U.S. Postal Service.

The facility’s operations will move to the Boston processing center and the Middlesex-Essex processing center in North Reading. No precise closing date has been issued yet for the Smith Street facility, but due to a moratorium, the facility will not close before May 15, according to Postal Service spokesman Dennis Tarmey.

The closings are contingent upon the Postal Service's efforts to change its service standards, which regulates the speed at which mail is delivered, according to the Postal Service.

The decision does not impact possible closings of Waltham Post Offices. In December, the Postal Service agreed to a moratorium on closing any post offices.

Also, employees will not be laid off but will have the chance to mvoe to other postal jobs or facilities, according to Tarmey.

The announcement comes after the Postal Service recently completed studying whether to close processing centers nationwide as the Postal Service struggles under massive debt. 

“The decision to consolidate mail processing facilities recognizes the urgent need to reduce the size of the national mail processing network to eliminate costly underutilized infrastructure,” Chief Operating Officer Megan Brennan said in a statement. “Consolidating operations is necessary if the Postal Service is to remain viable to provide mail service to the nation.”
