Waltham Islamic Center Moving to Moody Street?

Moody Street could soon be home to a new Waltham Islamic center.

The Waltham Islamic Society is looking to move to a Moody Street, according to its website and a WCAC-TV report.

The society plans to buy the site of The New Landing bar which recently closed after losing its business to a foreclosure auction in May, according to WCAC-TV. WIS officials tell WCAC-TV they plan to finalize the purchase of the property on July 1.

The WIS is currently based out of 16 Park Place, where it has been for 12 years, according to WCAC-TV.

A WIS board member tells WCAC-TV that its current place of worship does not suit their needs.

So far, the WIS has raised $450,000 to buy the building and ios seeking an additional $65,000, according to its website.

This is a welcome addition to Moody Street, that will add to the rich diversity it's becoming known for.

I hope non-Muslims will come to learn that true Muslims are as decent, honorable and law-abiding as the rest of us -- in some ways, maybe more so.

I went to college with many Muslims. They are peaceful, respectful, kind people who want nothing more than to enjoy their lives!

Agreed! Bring on the diversity. This could be good for Moody Street retail, too, because it could bring in more foot traffic. I'd like to see more shops in the neighborhood.

Where, then, is the right neighborhood for a mosque? I didn't know Waltham had zoning restricting churches to a particular part of town.

A Mosque does not belong on Moody Street. We have more foreign places on moody street as it is that we dont need any more. We Need more American places to be put on Moody Street.

What is an American place? While I have no trouble with welcoming LEGAL new comers to this great nation, I don't think a Mosque is a good fit with all the bars and decadent places (how soon before them try to get the porn stores to leave)? But to say that welcoming a religious center, even one that is very different that what we are used to is somehow un-American makes me sad, is that not why our forefathers left England? If you look at many of the stores on Moody ST now, you will see we already have a large Muslim presense (what do you think Halal meat is)? I hate to see the building leave the tax rolls more than anything else...and no, their foot traffic will not increase business as they don't drink or (in general) buy porn.
