Student Wins Red Sox Summer Internship Through Waltham College

A senior at the Regional was the winner of a contest that awarded him a summer intership with the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

A Hamilton student will have a dream internship for any member of Red Sox Nation – he’ll spend the month of July working at Fenway Park.

Brian Rodgers got the job through a contest run by Major League Baseball and called “Break into the Business of Baseball.”

Rodgers was selected by Bentley and MLB representatives from hundreds of entries.

This year was actually the second time Rodgers had entered the contest, which asks entrants to write a 100-word essay about why they want the internship. After not winning last year, Rodgers said he took his short essay to “the next level.”

His first essay focused “on the love of the game, in general.”

His latest, winning essay instead focused on his interest in the business of baseball.

Rodgers said he will likely work this summer with the Fenway Sports Group, completing marketing and public relations tasks. He also expects to be involved in special events related to the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park.

“We’re thrilled Brian was chosen to join us and we know he will make valuable contributions during his internship,” said Noah Garden, executive vice president, revenue for MLB Advanced Media in an announcement released by Bentley.

Rodgers plays sports – he’s on the high school tennis and co-op hockey team – but enjoys the management aspect of baseball the most.

In an interview with Hamilton-Wenham Patch, Rodgers said the Red Sox internship in another step in his goal to someday work in the front office of a major league baseball team.

Last summer, he had an internship with the North Shore Navigators in Lynn, a member of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. He would show up at about 3:30 p.m. on game day, doing everything from helping set up concession stands or merchandise stands to taking photos and uploading them to the Navigator’s Facebook page.

“It gave me a good sense of a sports organization as a whole,” he said.

Rodgers, like many high school seniors, is getting close to deciding on which college he will attend next year. He’s narrowed it down to University of Massachusetts at Amherst or the University of Notre Dame.

During a tour at UMass, Rodgers said he spoke to a professor who said that the most important thing for sports management major is to get an internship and work them way up. Good internships will give graduates a “leg up,” Rodgers said he was told.

“Not only will this internship be an opportunity to work for a team that I have always admired,” Rodgers said in the prepared announcement from Bentley. “But it will give me valuable work experience and a connection to talented professional people in the sports industry.”
