Waltham City Employee Arrested For DUI
Mayor Jeanette McCarthy said she is looking into the incident.
An employee of the Waltham city government was recently arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, according to city officials.
Mark Casella, 50, of 46 Lyman St., was arrested on Dec. 9 and charged with one count of driving under the influence of alcohol (second offense), according to police.
Mayor Jeanette McCarthy confirmed on Dec. 20 that Casella is a city employee and that she was looking into the personnel issues surrounding the incident. She did not specify for which department Casella works.
The incident began at around 6:03 p.m. when Waltham Police responded to a report of a disabled motor vehicle blocking the road in front of 11 Pleasant St., according to Waltham Police Sgt. Tim King. Officers responded and found Casella unconscious behind the wheel of a pickup truck. The rear end of the truck was positioned on the grassy part of the east side of the sidewalk, King said.
Officers woke Casella and performed a field sobriety test, which he failed, and arrested him on the DUI charge, King said.
Waltham Patch could not immediately reach Casella for comment.

His name was posted in the police log last week. Wasnt that enough? Why does he warrant a full blown story? You dont do that to any of the other DUI's in the city and theres a lot of them. It was a Sunday AND he was on vacation. He still is! It had nothing to do with the City or his employment. That doesnt make it any better, he shouldnt have been behind the wheel of anything IF he was that bad, but, dont give people the impression that he was working or in a City vehicle because thats the first thing that everyones going to assume. Thats the farthest thing from the truth and it had nothing to do with where he works. Did you call Melendez and ask her why she didnt show up for jury duty or the place where Kiley works and ask his boss if he knows anything about it. (Arrest Log Dec. 11-12) I didnt think so.

@DavidC,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Indeed, Mr. Casella's name was posted on Patch last week, but without the knowledge that he worked for the city of Waltham. I received a tip about where he worked, confirmed it and posted the new story you just read.
While what you claim about the circumstances of the incident may be true or false, no city official ever issued details about that and therefore, it was not included in the story. This story does not claim that he was in a city vehicle. it clearly states he was in a pickup truck. It does not say the city owned that truck.

Being a city employee paid by tax dollars is why its a story. Doesnt matter if he was on the clock or not.
But, if we do it for one, we should be doing it for all drunk drivers. Maybe some public humiliation will help them and their friends and family get them the help they really need.

It was enough when it was posted the first time. Do you post every time a cop gets a speeding ticket or the mayor fails to do her job. Their are a lot worse things going on in the city than the poor decisions this gentlemen made. Where he works was irrelevant to the story. Your just digging for dirt.. If you want dirt to dig... We can give you some.

Drunk drivers are a very serious issue. I wish we would make a bigger deal about it since people have such a lax attitude towards drinking and driving. Maybe public embarrassment will get people to get themselves some help before tragedy strikes.

That was the point I was trying to get across. I wouldnt have said anything if you ended the article with " Mr. Casela was in his personal vehicle and was not working at the time the incident took place." I agree. this is a great site and I read it every day and will continue to do so, but my opinion was that the article was slightly misleading and I just wanted to clarify a few things. Keep up the good work and if theres any openings have your guys get a hold of my guys and we can meet up.

Well this is what I have to say. If it's alright for the "Police Chief" to beat his wife & her friend, then, why make a spectacle out of a city employee who maybe had a bad day or has a problem??? It's not fair. The Police Chief gets to hide his face behind a wall when he should have been FIRED immediately. I feel for Mr. Casela we all make mistakes & it does not have to be announced. Leave the poor man alone.

People should spend less time defending someone on an open forum and spend more time getting them help and assistance. That's what a real friend does. And drinking and driving 2nd offense isnt a bad day. Its a serious problem. Help him.

I guess we're unanimous on this. When I read the article I found it irresponsible. Unless Mr. Casella was driving a City vehicle there is no reason to single him out in a headline article unless you intend to do that for every DUI in Waltham. What is your justification? So what if he's a City employee?
jo

but what i read was that this is mr. casella's second dui offense. the poor guy had a bad day? ya,'cause he got caught. what if he had his a pedestrian? if his truck was on the sidewalk or close to it at 6:03pm and he was drunk, it makes one wonder when he began drinking that day tht he was passed out behind the wheel.

Why don't we find out where he was and then we'll know what bar let him drink till he was smashed. Then we can write an article about the bar.

Enough is enough, Ryan Grannan-Doll. It was already posted for people to read… why must you now post with “In case you missed this yesterday: Waltham City Employee Arrested For DUI”? Give it a rest out of respect for the man and his family. Gosh, just end it.

Hi everybody,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this unfortunate story.
Let me provide some background. Mr. Casella's name appeared on Waltham Patch recently as a typical arrest log item, as we would do with anybody else who was arrested. I later received a tip that he is a city employee. I confirmed that with Mayor McCarthy and received additional details on the DUI incident from the police. That info was posted as the story you just read. Also, I attempted to reach Mr. Casella at his home to give him the chance to comment on this story, but he was not available.
Some of you have felt posting such a story was in poor taste -- totally valid concerns. It is not our intention to embarrass anybody for the sake of embarrassing them, only to provide information that is relevant to readers. In this case, this story is relevant and has the potential become more relevant for several reasons. While we have not yet confirmed details about Casella's job, it could involve driving a city car or operating machinery, both of which could injure himself, residents or fellow employees. That information is not yet known, but Patch is seeking it.
Again, thanks for your comments, but please keep in mind we are not trying to embarrass Mr. Casella.

So if he sat behind a desk or answered phones or pushed a mop would it be just as newsworthy. There must be other city employees that have had trouble with the law. How come there aren't stories about them?

Mk10,
Reporters and media don't always immediately or ever know when a city employee in any city is arrested for alleged criminals acts. We can't report what we don't know.

As a Waltham resident, I like to see what is happening in the City and read about it in the Patch. Unfortunately, we all pass judgement too quickly on people without knowing all the facts. Aside from walking a straight line and touching his finger to his nose, were any other tests done to prove that Mr. Cassella was in fact intoxicated, or did he have an underlying medical condition?? What was his blood alcohol level?

When he hits and kills some innocent person for drinking and driving You will say the same thing. Open your eyes drinking and driving is wrong don't need full story. That's a great way to teach your kids responsibility. I rather be ignorant then blind.

Seeing as I work with him every day Ill clear a few things up for you. Not that I have to. My initial comment is still the same. He was in his own vehicle on his own time. It has nothing to do with the City. Where do you get off saying he could hurt someone or himself. Now your giving people the impression that he shows up for work drunk and hes a hazard to his fellow employees or residents. I'll say it again, He Was Not On City Time! He left work on the 7th and didnt have to be back until a week later. Thats what "being on vacation" means. He does NOT drive a vehicle for the City, be it a car or truck nor does he operate any machinery. He could lose his license tomorow and still be qualified for his job description. Which, if you really need to know, hes a mechanic, and one of the top mechanics the city has at that. He happens to be one of the more upstanding employees that the City has. I might not be one of the so called City officials but I do work for the City and I have no reason to lie. The story should have ended last week unless you plan on divulging all the details about everyone elses life that gets arrested in this City. PS: No, He does not have to drive vehicles or equiptment in and out of the garage. There are other guys hired to do that. You cant just jump into a Fire engine and take it for a road test. Its not that easy.

valerie appears to have a potty mouth. she said she's a high school student and after reading the post, i wonder with all the mis-spelled words.
it is obvious that she loves her father but shame on her mother for allowing her to post in the manner that she did.
as for the post by david c, mr. casella does drive the vehicles and takes them home with him as well. he resides on a very busy street and people take notice when driving in the area.

What happened to innocent until proven quilty? It is very unfair to only hear one side of a story and make an assumption. None of us know what encountered and like someone said early on, we don't know if there were any medical issues. I am questioning why no one called for an ambulance if he was unconsious! Why would you take him from the vehicle and make him try to perform anything? What if he was having a stroke or a heart attack? Can you say Law Suit? It would have been to the police's benefit to have him sent to the hospital, they would have tested his blood! Not like he got pulled over while driving, the vehicle was disabled. Just saying I see some holes in this story. As for his whole job situation and the Mayor, well this is just ridiculous. From what I have read is he is a hardworking, devoted employee. Let this go. Revisit after verdict. At that point you can make your judgement, but lets be fair about it until then. I feel very bad for his wife and children. I am sure this is an embarassing situation for them. Unfortuneatly we sometime don't realize we hurt innocent people while trying to make an example of others. I hope the Mayor is looking into why this officer took an unconsious man from his vehicle. That is such a huge liability. I don't know, I just find this very concerning! Well I will put my faith into the legal system and let them do there job. I do not necessarily like to voice my opinion until I know the truth.

In response to jo, as I said, it is not part of his job requirement. If you see a City vehicle in front of his house its because he was either being dropped off or picked up. I dont remember the last time he took any City vehicle home. He does not do that. You missed my point completely, I'll say it again, he does not have to drive any vehicles to perform his job duties.

Jo, Whatever his daughter wrote is her own issue. Why are you blaming her mother? Her mother probably doesn't even know she wrote anything. What are you a stalker? What do you watch every move he makes? Get a job, life or something! Leave this man and his family alone! Your friggin creepy, watching this family like you do. we as citizens in waltham have the right to know who is that irresponsible to get behind the wheel of any vehicle, no matter who they are and where they work. It is not considered stalking when you are just looking out for your family and friends safety, there must have been concerns for this to have been noticed. I do believe i have read this address and name in the police log on several occasions. someone needs to intervene for the sake of our loved ones walking and driving in waltham.

I dont know where your getting your info from but you have NOT read this address or heard his name anywhere on Patch in previous posts. The 1st offense was almost 20 years ago and Ryan Doll was around 10 years old give or take a few years. I dont think he was writing for anybody but teachers back then.
