The Best Love Song Ever Is...

Valentine's Day is approaching, and we're compiling a list of love songs.

It's Valentine's Day, and love is in the air... on the radio, in the coffee shops and maybe on your iPod.

You know there's that one song that melts your heart every time you hear it. For me, it's "Over the Rainbow," sung by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. I don't know what it is, but that song makes stop in my tracks whenever those first notes are played.

A colleague of mine and I came up with this list of classic love songs:

  • "Wonderful Tonight," Eric Clapton
  • "Love Song," The Cure
  • "At Last," Etta James
  • "Unchained Melody," The Righteous Brothers
  • "All I Want is You," U2

Is your favorite on our short list? If not, share it in the comments section below.

Those are some good ones... I also remembered John Denver's "Annie's Song." Love that one too.

"All I Want is You" stops me in my tracks. Probably my favorite all-time U2 song.

While it definitely sounds like it could be Stevie Wonder, this song was in fact recorded in 1969 by a one-hit-wonder band called "Spiral Starecase" (spelled that way -- remember, this was the swinging sixties!). Great song.

I know I'm thrusting myself into an age category with these, but... "A Love Song" by Loggins & Messina. "A Case of You" by Joni Mitchell. "Have I Told You Lately" by Van Morrison. "Popsicle Toes" by Michael Franks. "How Can I Tell You" by Cat Stevens. "Sometimes When We Touch" by Dan Hill.

I know it's not in the spirit of the day, but the saddest "love gone wrong" love song is definitely Evanessence's "My Immortal." I simply cannot hear that song without crying.

I think there are a number of fantastic love songs out there, and all of them vary depending on what stage of love you're in.

I'm not going to go into a rant about U2 (for my opinion, read Nick Horby's "High Fidelity) but here are a few of my favorite lovey songs:

-Jamie Cullum, "I Think, I Love" (for wooing)
-Iron & Wine, "Love & Some Verses"
-Ray Lamontagne, "You Are the Best Thing"
-Bon Iver, "Re: Stacks" (post-love/break-up)
-New Order's "Love Vigilantes" is one of my favorites as well, although a bit sad/strange

Two deep cuts from the Boss will surprise the uninitiated by the tenderness and yearning that big voice of his can evoke. Try "Frankie" from Tracks and/or "Jersey Girl" from Live 75-85. And, if you like those, try "Valentine's Day" from Tunnel of Love and "Drive All Night" from The River...
