Starbucks Proposed for Waltham (Again)

Starbucks could be coming to Waltham.

For the third time since 2003, Starbucks has proposed opening its first location in Waltham, according to Traffic Commission documents.

The Commission is scheduled to discuss traffic impacts from the Starbucks during its Wednesday, Dec. 19 meeting at 10 a.m. at City Hall.

The Starbucks would be located inside the proposed shopping complex at the old Polaroid side at 1265 Main St., according to Commission documents. A bank, yet to be named, has also been proposed for the site. Both merchants would include drive-thru windows.

Under city regulations, the City Council would have to approve a fast food permit and a separate drive-thru permit for Starbucks. The bank would also require a drive-thru permit.

SPC Main Street LLC is named as the developer, according to Commission documents.

The proposal comes months after a developer cancelled his plans for a Starbucks at the corner of Lexington Street and Trapelo Road.

The new Starbucks would sit about 800 feet back from Main Street. The 3,500 square foot bank would abutt the coffee shop.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS

According to Traffic Commission documents, neither the Starbucks nor the bank would impact traffic on Main Street, City Traffic Engineer J. Michael Garvin wrote in a memo to the Traffic Commission. Both potential tenants would not impact a previously submitted traffic study, Garvin wrote. However, the Commission documents don't reveal secifics on the prior study.

I must tell you, that if this has to go before another special committee because of traffic concerns, I am going to be a little more than angry! It clearly states traffic will NOT be impacted. What will impact traffic is that complex as a whole, but Waltham needs a shopping area like this. The traffic studies have been done, the blasting continues, and I say bring on the shopping and the stores!

Mk10, ALL fast food permit applications must go through the Council.

The 1265 Main St site now lists, Market Basket (who is heavily involved in the development),Two Ovens – A new and exciting Bertuccis restaurant concept, Starbucks, Bonefish Grill (a division of Flemings/Outback), Marshalls, and Jake & Joe’s (a division of the Chateau). I also believe the bank is TD Bank. I've been told by a bank official that the 2nd Ave branch is closing and moving nearby.

How about Cabela's? It'd be nice to have a Bass Pro alternative...

Brian,

I'd take either. Since The Bait Bucket closed the closets place to get any fishing tackle is the Natick Outdoor Store. Would be nice to have someplace close to Waltham.

Our proximity to BPS Foxborough, the Commonwealth's heavy restrictions on firearms sales and the general lack of interest in the outdoors by Americans lead me to believe that Waltham is not a prime location for Cabela's. But I'm sure another "Sporting good store" will arrive to sell overpriced Patriot's jerseys and Northface fleeces. Who knows maybe they will even sell golf clubs for the course that will never be built in Waltham?

I strongly believe that Waltham needs a Starbucks! We have way too many Dunkin Donuts in Waltham. I travel everyday out of the city of Waltham to go to a nearby city that has a Starbucks. I work and live in Waltham. Please reconsider this.
