Would you support a ban on smoking in apartments?
A proposed state law would prohibit smoking ciagrettes in apartment but it has failed to gain significant support, according to the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.
Opponents of the bill told the newpspaper that banning residents from smoking in their own homes infringes on their rights, according to the paper. A 77-year-old Lunenburg resident proposed the idea because he is allergic to smoke and would like to move into an apartment.

There are already places that plan smoking here in Waltham. Depends from landlord to landlord. I personally am excited about a smoke-free building and environs

This is going WAY too far, and it will be almost impossible to enforce. Smokers who try to obey the rules will end up smoking on their porches or steps. Just last year, a house in Waltham burned down when a smoker tossed a cigarette into some landscaping mulch. When are people going to realize that smokers have rights, too? We put up with it when smoking was banned in offices, restaurants and bars, which are all public places. But to restrict what one can do within the privacy of their home is beyond reason.

I say Yes, Yes, Yes!!! I quit exactly six years ago, three days ago. I'm so happy! You can quit too. Just get the patch, put an elastic on your wrist and every time you want one snap your yourself. It works! Check out the American Lung Assoc. website, they have "quit smoking" message boards - they really helped too. You go into the section that pertains to you, whether your 1 day out or 1 month out. Everyone on there is going through the same thing. It's great, it can be done!! You can do it!!

So all of a sudden we are a city of laws? Please, pass this law and tell me how many law-abiders there are for this one. Just more laws laws laws, less enforcement enforcement enforcement...

I've lived in an apartment building for several years that initially did not have a problem with second-hand smoke prior to a few years back, when it acquired 6 - 7 smokers in a 40-unit building. In 2012, management put up signs in common areas to restrict smoking, which I was glad about, since I felt I couldn't always open windows for fresh air. However, smoking is allowed in the parking area at one end and outside the front entrance at the other end, besides within their own units.
In time, I realized the smoke odor has worsened within my unit, from smoking occurring within other units or from their open windows. As I've closed up the apartment during the night or after reentering anytime, there is that regular, stale odor. I've attempted covering up some vents, but I understand it can enter through crevices, outlets, fixtures -- yet unsure where all it is coming from and is becoming too much. The thing is, it isn't even from a unit connected to mine, but a couple of doors down, besides any other smoker. On a "clean air day", I can get some relief. Besides this, there are cigarette butts littering up the grounds. I find this to be such a nuisance, besides unhealthy, since I suffer from Asthma and Allergies and don't appreciate my place smelling and paying to live here on top of it. I would like to address the management company with this matter, yet the supervisor antagonistic. If it were feasible to move to a "non-smoking" building, I would do so.
