Should illegal immigrants living in Massachusetts residents be prohibited from registering a car?
A new state law intended to prevent illegal immigrants from registering or operating a car requires anybody registering a vehicle provide proof of legal residence, a Social Security number or a license, our partners at Sharon Patch recently reported.
Previously, motorists were only required to show proof of insurance and their date of birth.
The law would have prevented Blanca Contreras, a Waltham illegal immigrant accused of motor vehicle homicide of a Waltham man, from registering a car. However, the car she was allegedly driving during the incident was not registered to her.
Gov. Deval Patrick, who vetoed the law prior to lawmakers overriding that veto, said it would have forced the Registry of Motor Vehicles to "identify and police undocumented people." State Sen. Robert Hedlund said the law would make the roads safe.

Absolutely. The key word here is 'illegal' immigrant. I believe that this could be the gateway to other 'benefits'. Example: If an illegal immigrant goes to beauty school or a vocational school to become a plumber or electrician, should they be granted a license by the state? If they are illegal, the first process one should follow is to become a legal resident, then apply for a driver's license.

I cannot beleive this is even a question... WTF is going on here. If you are HERE ILLEGALLY, Learn the language, get legalized then get your voter card and your license in the same day! Until then...start studying... It cannot be simplier! That's how this country was built.

The key word is 'illegal'. Why should we offer the rights and privileges of citizens to illegal unless they have clearly started on the path top citi to be at the 'other' house. Cars are important to getting jobs...is that what we want for them?.
