How Will Sale of Shaw's & Star Market Change Our Local Grocery Stores?

No immediate changes planned, but store leases could eventually be sold, analysts say.

The new owners of local Shaw's supermarkets say no immediate changes are planned for the stores.

There are two stores in Waltham: a Shaw's in North Waltham on Lexington Street and another on River Street.

According to the Boston Globe, there are 155 Shaw's and 14 Star Markets with 17,000 employees. In November the troubled company had announced cutting 700 jobs.

The new owners, an investor group led by Cerberus Capital Management, bought the stores as part of a bigger $3.3 billion deal. Cerberus also controls the locally based Steward Health Care System network of community hospitals

The Boston Herald says Albertson's will take over all the New England Shaw's and Star Markets. Albertson's is a well-known supermarket brand name in the West and parts of the northern Midwest.

The Herald also reports that the deal has industry analysts guessing that some of the Shaw’s and Star Markets could be sold off again to others after the deal is done.

Do you shop at Shaw's or Star? Does it matter to you who owns the company?

That's what happens when price gouging occurs. That's why everyone goes to Market Basket

True, just wait till Market Basket opens in Waltham, Shaw's and Stop&Shop will see business decline.

@Frosty, what other predictions do you mean? Do you not agree that business will slow at other food stores since Market Basket has lower prices.

Why is the Shaw's on River Street never busy? It was remodeled sometime ago. Maybe people are going to Stop&Shop or the nearby BJ's...

The two Shaw's markets in Waltham are way too big. I like Hannaford for its more manageable size and its friendly staff. Their prices are also more reasonable than Shaw's. When I want the best-quality produce, however, I splurge on Wilson Farm in Lexington!

Maybe you should try one of those little electric carts? I bet you can mount your GPS on it.

Market Basket is going be HUGE in providing buying value for we, the consumer. Market Basket also will become a focus for additional other buying options to move in and making this area a real center of retail ACTION and JOB CREATION!! This will become a TRUE ANCHOR STORE. Albertson's moving in and taking over won't be bad for the consumer. Now, if Waltham could convince Russo's to open and be another anchor store in proposed replacement Sovereign Bank Building with the established parking space levels, real opportunity to have strong Downtown rebirth.
