How Waltham Hit-And-Run Occurred, Step-By-Step

  • At around 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 23, Waltham Police responded to a call to the intersection of School and Church streets, the scene of the accident. They found a man, later identified as Scott Coxall, lying unconscious on the ground at southernmost side of School Street. He had suffered serious injuries to his head and right leg.
  • An ambulance transported Coxall to Massachusetts General Hospital. He was admitted to the intensive care unit and his family was notified.
  • He was wearing a red knitted hat, a blue winter coat, blue jeans and white sneakers. His hearing aid and pair of headphones were found on the ground next to him.

Witness 1: (Patch is withholding the names of witnesses because they are not accused of committing any crime): The witness told police he was driving west on School Street prior to the crash when he saw a dark-colored SUV turn onto the street from Mount Pleasant Street at 35 miles per hour. The vehicle cut him off, never straightened out after making the turn and then sideswiped a parked car facing west on School Street. The suspect vehicle failed to stop and accelerated to about 60 miles per hour before blowing through a stop sign at Church Street and striking Coxall. The suspect vehicle then fled west on School Street. The witness was not able to provide police with the license plate of the vehicle or further information on the driver.

Witnesses 2 and 3 (man and woman): The pair was sitting outside 10 Park Place when they heard the sound of screeching tires and an impact. The pair saw an SUV travelling west on School Street and turn onto Church Street travelling about 60 miles per hour. The vehicle failed to halt for stop signs. The pair saw the vehicle strike Coxall as he was stepping into a marked crosswalk. The female witness identified the driver of the suspect vehicle as a woman.

Witness 4: He was walking on the northernmost side of School Street just of Church Street when he saw the suspect vehicle travelling 60 miles per hour and hit Coxall. The vehicle then fled toward Lexington Street.

Witness 5: He was a passenger in a vehicle travelling south on Church Street. As his vehicle was sitting at a stop sign on School Street, he saw the suspect vehicle speeding west on School Street before going through intersection without stopping for a stop sign. He then saw Coxall down in the road and saw the vehicle flee the scene.

Witness 6: She was stopped in her vehicle facing north on Church Street as she prepared to turn left onto School Street when she saw a large car pass her on the right at 60 miles per hour, hit Coxall, and flee the scene.

Evidence

  • Damage to the front end and hood area of the suspect vehicle matched damage caused to the parked vehicle.
  • Pieces of the suspect vehicle’s left front headlight lens matched that of another portion found at the scene.
  • The suspect vehicle’s engine was still warm when police located it after the crash, indicting it had been driven recently.
