UPDATED: 8:43 p.m. Unofficial online results from Newton show Lawn taking the city 374 votes to Dixon's 145. The individual precinct results are as follows:

Ward 1, Precinct 1: Lawn 130, Dixon 54
Ward 1, Precinct 4: Lawn  93, Dixon 42
Ward 3, Precinct 4: Lawn 151, Dixon 49 

UPDATED: 8:39 p.m. Results are in from all precincts. Lawn has 1,814 votes and Dixon has 858, with Lawn winning all precincts. 

UPDATED: 8:37 p.m. Dixon arrived at 8:20 p.m. and is gladhanding supporters, with about 100 gathered at the American Legion Post in Waltham. 

UPDATED 8:30 p.m.Newton's online election results were initially flip-flopped on the city website but have since been fixed with Lawn taking Newton 244-91 with two of three polling locations reporting. 

Lawn's campaign is reporting Lawn taking all 10th Middlesex precincts, 1814 votes to Dixon's 858.

2:30 p.m.: By 1:20 p.m.: 269 voters had cast their ballots at the former Bright School in Waltham, according to Election Clerk Elaine Hay. 

Although turnout has been low today, a steady stream of voters, mostly elderly residents, trickled into the polls when Patch visited the site. 

Outside, several support of Republican candidate Jim Dixon held signs waving to passing motorists. 

"I think [Dixon] stands a good chance [of winning the race," said one of the supporters, Pat McCartin. "He's got connections. He has good judgment." 

UPDATED, 1:15 p.m.: By noon, the polling station at the Watertown Police Station had 173 ballots cast come. The number appears to be down from the primary, said Deanna Dement Myers, the warden for precinct 10.

Lawn supporter Tom McManus said the stream of voters has been pretty good.

"Things are going well, we are getting a pretty steady turnout here," McManus said.

McManus was one of several Lawn sign holders at the Watertown polling station.

Chris Dunn stood across the driveway with his Jim Dixon sign. The final result, he said, will depend on how many people come out to support their candidate.

"It's always about what's the turnout going to be," Dunn said.

Being a Republican in the area can be a challenge, Dunn said.

"I think (Lawn) is the heaver favorite," Dunn said. "Not only because his is his precinct, but because of the number of Democrats in the area, and the whole state."

UPDATED, Tuesday, May 10, 12:21 p.m.: Voter turnout, at least in Newton, appears to be quite low as of 12 p.m. Only 33 out of 1,536 registered voters had cast ballots at the Pellegrini Playground polling place in Newton, according to Election Warden Warden Dan Leone.

Nobody was casting ballots when Patch visited the polling place at 12 p.m.

Leone said he believed turnout was low because Newton Alderman Allan Ciccone Jr., a Democrat who lost in the April primary election, was no longer on the ballot, there leaving residents little reason to vote. 

Leone said the state government should return to having the governor appoint an interim state representative who would fill out the remaining term of a vacant seat, instead of going through the special election process. 

"The ought to go back to the governor appointing somebody," he said.

Today is the special state election for the 10^th Middlesex District state representative seat.

Watertown Town Councilman John Lawn faces Waltham Republican Jim Dixonto replace State Rep. Peter Koutoujian, who was appointed sheriff of Middlesex County earlier this year.

Lawn defeated Waltham City Councillor Gary Marchese, Waltham resident Sean Durkee and Newton Alderman Allan Ciccone Jr. during the April Democratic primary election. Dixon is the only Republican officially in the race.
