Don't Drive Through Crosswalks in Waltham, Or Else...

Waltham Police are increasing efforts to enforcement crosswalk laws and protect pedestrians.

Waltham Police are conducting crosswalk enforcement patrols this summer in the city, according to the Boston Globe.

Police plan to issue fines of up to $200 to morotists who don't stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, according to the Globe.

The patrols come after several recent accidents, some of which resulted in the death of pedestrians. A Waltham woman allegedly ran over and killed Scott Coxall in 2011 when Coxall tried to cross a street outside of a sidewalk. Also, Bentley University graduate student Qinpei (Vivian) Lin was killed in 2012 when a car struck her as she crossed a road outside of a crosswalk.  Also, Waltham student Alex Cabrera was seriously injured in May 2012 when he tried to cross Lexington Street outside of a crosswalk.

Police tell the Globe patrols will increase in the next two weeks and continue throughout the year.

For full details, see the Boston Globe article.

It's EXTREMELY important to note that the law says "when traffic control devices are not in use" this means pedestrians in a cross walk with a no walk signal are breaking the law. If Waltham police want to be even more helpful they should also ticket pedestrians outside of crosswalks and those crossing when not allowed. Three of your stated cases above are people struck outside of crosswalks. It's the pedestrians not obeying the laws not the drivers.

@ Shauna this is not possible, there are no laws on the books which the police can use to penalize pedestrians for walking outside of the cross walks. Also correction: Scott Coxall was walking in a cross walk when he was struck, I was at the scene and and was in charge on scene - Sgt Bill G .WPD

I sure hope these fines are also enforced with police officers who continually drive through crosswalks without stopping for pedestrians. I can't tell you how many times I've been trying to cross Main St., clearly in the crosswalk, and a cruiser goes right past me, usually they're on their phone and don't even see me or pretend not too. Fair is fair, right?

Feel free to report them if this happens. Mistakes do happen so please do not paint a broad brush. Also talking on your phone in a car is not a crime "Yet" When it is a crime feel free to make a complaint.

Genuine question - what does in the cross walk actually mean? Do I have to stop if the pedestrian is waiting to cross, but standing on the sidewalk? Or do I only have to stop if the pedestrian is actually in the process of crossing the street?
