SOUND OFF: Do You Support a Seasonal Leaf Blower Ban?

Autumn is nigh. Do you chafe at blasting leaf-blowers, or is that tidy look worth the audio anguish?

The first leaves are falling, and, in some towns, season leaf-blower bans are about ready to take a vacation.

Ladies and gentlemen, start your leaf-blower engines.

Newton actually has a Leaf Blower Task Force.

Brookline's already got one. Leaf-blowers have been banned since spring; starting next weekend (Sept. 15), blowers will be allowed for three months; the leaf-blower ban resumes in December.

What do you think about banning leaf blowers: the blessed sound of leaf-blower silence or a prime example of government overreach?

Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

I would love to see a ban on Leaf Blowers. It drives me crazy to see landscapers, homeowners, etc use these things only to blow the leaves, dirt, etc into the street or just away from the property they are cleaning. The proper thing to do would be to blow the leaves into one area then sweep them up. Most yards in town are not even more than 5000 square feet so that is another reason why they are not really needed and houses are on top of one another in this town making the sound of a leaf blower heard through many homes.

Correct and before blowers people were thinner and smarter. The fact is that leaves are food for the soil, for those of us who still care about nature. The time it takes to rake is similar to the time it takes to blow. Laziness is the main factor here and I don't want my children and pets to breathe your inconsiderate filth.

Hey Ken, If the leaves are food for soil, maybe you should take in all of your neighbors leaves.

I think all the land scapers should get together and charge $1000 for leaf removal in those towns because they have to do it by hand with rakes. If they did that you would see this foolishness stopped damn quick.

In the interest of TRUTH . . . I must point out that ELECTRIC leaf blowers can be used 24/7 360 the year between ours of 8am and 6pm . . . (Devil is in the details!)

I fail to see how protecting our air quality and diminishing noise pollution is snobbery. It has nothing to do with being "better" than someone. I don't even know what people mean by that.

Blowers offer very little benefit for a significant toll on our environment. One leaf blower a year can emit as much pollution as 80 cars because there are no emissions controls. They waste gas (and increase our dependence on foreign oil). And the decibel level, especially with several going next to each other, is actually 10 time louder than the decibel level of other noises that are considered acceptable in residential areas (60 decibels).

And for those people who get their yards professionally done, leaf blowers are totally unfair to the workers. They are forced to use these machines so they can move quickly and get to the next house. The workers have to breathe those fumes and lose their hearing so people can have a cheap yard service. It's just not right. Workers should be raking and being paid more for the service.

So yes. Please institute a ban.

It's a snob thing Next you will ban lawn mowers, (we want the old push mowers) Then no blowing of snow after 6 pm at night, And it will keep going and going. It's a snob thing period... I will use my leaf blower When i want. Try and Fine me. Ill see you in court. SNOBS!

I'm with Heather 100%. It's not at all 'snobby' for us to work together to reduce energy waste, reduce air pollution, reduce carbon emissions, reduce noise pollution and protect workers -- it's simple common sense.

It ultimately comes down to, too much government control. Also, too much catering to the few and hurting the masses. I agree with Earnhardt, where does it stop?

sorry to ruin your fun but electric blowers use more fuel than gas powered because of conversion factors and transmission line friction but they throw just as much dirt into your lungs. and theyre not quiet either.

it stops when when guys like you move up the ladder to a real job, stop whining like 2 year olds and leave lawn mowing to school kids where it belongs. grass cutting is not a career. school-kids have always done this work, many times with no power mower, no leaf blower at all and no whining, for 25 cents. change your diaper and move on, you have no case.

I think I need to clarify my point. I don't really think that the leaf blowers are all that bad but I do think they get abused and misused and by that I mean by blowing leaves and debris away from your property and onto another. The noise is a bit much but I could certainly deal with that more than I can when I see a neighbor out with theirs or a landscaper and they are not just blowing the leaves but not cleaning them up. Used respectively they don't really bother me, although it is funny to see someone with mostly pavement and no yard using them.

Let's be real. Nobody follows the existing May to September ban anyway. Every single landscaper in my neighborhood used gas powered leaf blowers all summer long -- no exaggeration.

What's the point of passing a law when there is no compliance or enforcement?

In Brookline, the police are still working on educating landscapers about the leaf blower ban, which went into effect this June. There are a handful of calls in the police log each week, and that's typically when the police have an opportunity to educate the landscapers.

The Chief has said they're getting a lot of calls about weed whackers as well, which make similar sounds.

Agreed! now it looks like weed whackers will be next,,, then come lawnmowers, then snowblowers. As I stated earlier. take me to court,, I can almost guarantee Brookline will lose. Its a question of a few rich people putting pressure on the politicians. In effect: the snobs versus the rest of us. It's all about the rich whiners who don't want the bbq by the pool ruined by some poor guy cleaning his yard,,, they can't stand the thought of junior's graduation party from BB&N ruined by some shmuck doing yard work... SNOBS

By banning leaf-blowers in communities, it puts an extra cost on the older population of the community to care for their real estate property. Many senior citizens have to use the services of landscapers to cut their grass and other services to care for their real estate grounds. By banning leaf-blowers the landscaper has to use additional man-power to clean up the property which increases the cost of landscaping for the fix-income senior citizen.

I don't hear snobbery here, but I do hear a bunch of knuckle draggers too lazy to rake their leaves. you blowers have been breathing too much of the dirt you blow into the air that wrecks all of our lungs, including our childrens young lungs. electric blowers are just as bad. If you'd get off your beer filled ass and rake your leaves like I've done for 70 years, you'd be healthier and smarter. Life was better before draggers and blowers.

Susan Keeley

While I wouldn't shed a tear if every last leafblower on earth suddenly stopped working and couldn't be replaced -- I hate with a passion the sound they make! -- banning them is extreme. It seems to me this is one of those things that the lawn implement manufacturers should take back to their design boards. Make them quieter, make them more fuel efficient or rechargeable or some such thing. We used to own an electric one and it was significantly quieter than our neighbors' gas-powered one. Making them have lower emissions and less of an assault on auditory health can be accomplished with enough consumer pressure.

Turning up the iPod is not a viable suggestion. There's no amount of additional ear drum damaging noise that can possibly cover up the whine and screech of leaf blowers. Newer models apparently are being produced with lower noise levels so the industry is aware this is an issue and is at least attempting to rectify it to some degree.

As for the folks who blow their leaves and dirt into the street -- now that is something the town could and should address. Though TMM made a very pertinent point. The laws we already have on the books about blowers aren't enforced. Enacting new ones is probably pointless since there will alwyas be a contingent of people who get their jollies out of breaking them.

Maybe people are upset because many times (at least in my neighborhood) the landscapers start with the noisemakers super early (6:45am). I realize they have a job to do but it is very disruptive so early in the morning.

lisa, at what hour of the day is it o.k. to throw dirt into your children's lungs? folks have used rakes for thousands of years and they didn't throw tons of dirt into the air the way blowers do. they are totally unnecessary, very dangerous, waste energy, extremely unhealthy in many ways, and used mostly by the ignorant ones who usually ruin things for the rest of us.

Your odd disdain for Brookline and silly notion that every household has a built in butler (probably next to the washer and dryer hookup) aside, I agree, I don't think a ban is necessary, but I see the arguments on both sides. That being said, a ban getting passed wouldn't bother me either, because, well, how many non landscapers in this town really have gas powered leaf blowers anyway? I also think your "slippery slope" argument leading to a lawn mower ban, snow blower ban, dogs and cats living together ban, is a little off the mark. This issue is more akin to the idling of diesel trucks or something along those lines. Also, I don't think your court costs would be very high as it would take a judge all of 2 minutes to determine that you knowingly and willfully violated a town ban...I also doubt you would go court in the first place as no one is going to enforce such a rule...

9:38 pm on Wednesday, September 12, 2012

@ Santo. It's the truth, not disdain. Court costs aside, You fail to mention the fact that I would win, As for the "slippery slope" argument. Tewksbury (not my town) Tried last year to enforce a snow blower ban, Before 7 am and after 8 pm/ But because people have to clean out the driveways to get to work. it was shot down quickly. However I can see a snobby town as Brookline pushing such a law through, followed soon by mowing lawns at certain times etc etc. Dogs and Cats? Hmmm does Brookiline animal control know the live together? I think you are the one a little off the mark. That's how things like this start: With one ban on something then soon something else, and so on.. Its a town full of SNOBS and NIMBY'S , By the way, Where do you keep YOUR butler? in the room off the library?

You're right, I did fail to mention that you would win your case where your only defense would be "but Your Honorrrrrrr, I don't like this rule that I knowingly violated! Waaaaaaaa" because you wouldn't win. And while I still enjoy your sweeping generalizations of the town of Brookline and its populous, I still fail to see how a leaf blower ban leads to a ban of ANYTHING ELSE. Why? Because its a BAN ON LEAF BLOWERS! LEAF BLOWERS!! Do you even own one?? If they were banned tomorrow would your life be impacted in ANY WAY? Do you seriously think this leads to an Orwellian future with Big Brother? Do you really think if Wobun bans leaf blowers they will eventually ban dancing ala Footloose??

And for the record, I keep my butler in the living room with me. I actually dictate my posts to him...His grammar clearly isn't perfect, but we're on it together....well, when he's not buying me Fig Newtons (insert joke generalizing the town of Newton here).

im afraid i haven't heard anything from earnhardt to suggest that he could win anything in court other than a conehat. with non-starters like him the ban should have no problem passing.by the way, none of these folks have butlers, which would strongly suggest that earnhardt is delusional amongst his many other problems. probably explains why he can't find any work other than blowing leaves and dirt. the noise, dirt, and fumes probably get him quite high.

Santo Santo Santo, you poor misguided soul. Bans on anything will eventualy lead to more bans. I Own a leaf blower. DO YOU? ban leaf blowers now.. then next come regulations on when you can use OTHER Outdoor power equipment. Think about it! You fail to see it because you choose NOT to see it. Anytime something gets taken away from me my life is impacted, Especially when it is taken away by a bunch of snobs who simply do not want to hear noise interrupting their lives in any way.. leaf blowers now, all outdoor power equipment in the future, Unless of course you pay 50 bucks for a lawn mowing permit, Can't you see it coming? are you that naive? if I was your Butler, I wouldn't stay in the living room with you. Any good Butler knows its called a Parlor, not a living room. Every once in a while stop holding your nose up so high in the air and wake up!
