The sign outside Tresca's Eating Place, located in the plaza behind Watertown Square, is peeling; but regular customers probably don't mind, because inside it's spacious, friendly and well-lit. And the food is hearty and inexpensive.

The restaurant is open until 3 p.m. on weekdays, 1 p.m. on weekends it and specializes in all-day breakfasts. Dishes include omelettes, French toast, and variations on "two eggs any style" with add-ons. Lunches are the traditional fare, such as club sandwiches, different kinds of burgers, a vegetarian burger and two dinners: a breaded fish plate and a chicken cutlet plate. 

Suggested dish: We ordered two eggs over easy with home fries, toast, and a chicken cutlet. The plate can also come with bacon, ham or sausage. The eggs were a stand-out. They tasted fresh and had runny yolks and creamy whites with no burnt edges. The chicken cutlet and home fries were blander, but a dose of pepper perked them up. The whole-wheat toast was good (and essential for sopping up the yolks) and the iced coffee robust.

The vibe: Homey, friendly and efficient.

Cool factor no. 1: This customer noticed three eggs on the plate instead of the listed two. When asked about it, the waitperson shook her head and replied: "I know -- they can't count....It happens with the omelettes, too."

Cool factor no. 2: The solid lime green booths, stools and tabletops are colorful, soothing and cool all at the same time.

Cool factor no. 3: Five different choices of bread. No artisan brands, but still a choice.

Cool factor no. 4: The counter and stools face the main eating area rather than the grills.
